The heart of the castle Rosenborg Slot was built in 1606-07 and it was originally described as a "summerhouse in the garden". |
In the years up to 1634 the castle was enlarged and changed with might and main. Today Rosenborg stands with its high towers and its red sandstone ornamented masonry as a dignified representative of King Christian the Fourth's many buildings. A number of original rooms are preserved at the castle, the King's private living room among others. The most magnificent room is the baronial hall which contains tapestries of King Christians the Fifth, showing the victories of the Scanian war (1976-1979). The throne of the autocratic Kings, made out of gold and unicorn horn, can also be seen here. Behind the one meter thick walls of the treasury, the royal crowns and the invaluable crown jewels are located.

Karen Blixen is among other things the writer of the book "Out of Africa". A screen version of the book was made in 1985 and it resulted in success all over the world. |

The great Danish writer Karen Blixen first achieved fame in America and eventually throughout most of the world. She spent the greater part of her life in Rungstedlund, where she was born in 1885 and died in 1962. For seventeen years she lived on a coffee farm in Kenya. When the mother died in 1939, Karen Blixen became mistress of the house 'Rundstedlund' and could renovate the home according to her own taste. It was here that she wrote, both in English and Danish, not only the book that became her first major success "Seven Gothic Tales", but also her other books inclucing "Out of Africa" - of which the Oscar-winning film version released in 1985 reached an international audience - as well as her collections of stories "Winter's Tales" and " Last Tales". The main entrance to the Karen Blixen Museum is situated in the original west wing where the coach house, stable and hay loft used to be. The architect who was responsible for the restoration of the building was professor Vilhelm Wohlert and the redesigning allowed for a book stall, café, display centre and library section with audio-visual facilities for listening to the entrancing voice of Karen Blixen and watching slides recalling scenes from her years in Africa. To this days the north wing rooms remain unchanged as in her time, always graced with vases containing freshly cut flowers. This north wing of Rundstedlund is also open to the public and here visitors find a small gallery with exhibits in oil, pastel and charcoal - all works by Karen Blixen.
